All undergraduate students must earn three (3) credits in physical education and complete a 50 yard swim to fulfill the graduation requirement for physical education. Credits may be earned by successfully completing activity courses, wellness-oriented non-activity courses, and participation in intercollegiate and club programs. Satisfactory completion of courses in physical education is based on skill improvement and participation.

Physical Education Credit Information

  • Students may repeat a class for physical education (PE) credit.
  • All PE classes are added or dropped on Banner during the add/drop period which ends the 2nd Thursday of the term.
  • A student who is not registered on Banner for a PE class will not be allowed to enter the class.
  • Students must be enrolled on Banner in order to participate in any PE class whether or not you intend to receive a PE credit.
  • PE credits do not carry a grade point and will not affect your GPA. The .000 under credits for a PE course simply means you have no credit points toward your GPA. The PE credit appears as P (pass) or NP (not pass).
  • Intramural sports do not earn PE credit.

Students must attend 13 classes or activity sessions in classes/activities which meet two or more times per week.  Any absence for illness or injury beyond the allowed absences must be authorized by the Medical Director of Health Services.  Students can then contact the Director of Physical Education for options to make-up missed classes.

Swim Requirement

Students are encouraged to complete the swim requirement prior to their first-year trip or during Orientation. Otherwise, it must be completed during recreational swim hours under the supervision of the lifeguard on duty. Exemptions from this requirement must come from the medical director of the college.

If a student is unable to complete the 50 yard swim, he or she may fulfill this requirement by successfully completing a course in beginning swim.

Students complete the 50-yard (2 lengths of the pool) swim in the Karl Michael Pool in the Alumni Gym during open recreation hours, weekdays 10am-2pm and weekends 2-5pm. Please notify a lifeguard that you would like to complete your 50-yd swim requirement and bring your completion card to room 167 in Alumni Gym. You may slide the card under the door if it is not open.   The PE office is in Room 167 in the Gym. PE phone is 603-646-2478.
